Rolex in the World of Professional Sports

Rolex worn by Los Angeles Champions

While 2020 has been anything but favorable for most, this year has proven to be quite a lucrative one for Los Angeles pro sports. Ringing in 2 back to back championships were the LA Lakers and the LA Dodgers, winning the 2020 NBA Finals and the World Series 2020, respectively – just this month, within weeks of each other. These timely triumphs were not only over their own respective sports and divisions, but also over a significantly trying year – giving sports fans in not only LA, but worldwide, something to be excited about for the first time in a while. Especially since one of the many things majorly compromised this year is the world of professional sports. One way that we at The Watch Standard stay engaged with sports is by paying close attention to the choice timepieces of some big-time athletes. Let’s take a look at the wide array of watches that many professional athletes wear from the Rolex collection.

2020 World Series Champs: Los Angeles Dodgers

Several of our world champion Dodgers are fans of the crown, frequently adorning their wrists with various models of Rolex watches.

First baseman and outfielder, Cody Bellinger, has been seen off-field on occasion wearing a stainless steel Datejust 41 complete with a jubilee bracelet and black dial.

Enrique “Kiké” Hernandez sports an Everose Daytona chronograph with a black ceramic bezel and a unique black Oysterflex bracelet – luxurious yet sporty, and just as versatile as Hernandez as a utility player who has played every position for the Dodgers, except catcher.

Dodgers right fielder, Marcus Lynn “Mookie” Betts, is often referred to as one of MLB’s most stylish athletes – often seen with a yellow gold Day-Date President adorning his wrist.

Los Angeles Laker & 4-time MVP: Lebron James

While we’re on the subject of LA champions, we would be remiss not to mention Los Angeles Laker and four-time NBA MVP, Lebron James. Although Lebron is a brand ambassador of another luxury watch brand, Audemars Piguet, he has quite the rotation of Rolex timepieces on deck. He has most frequently been seen rocking a yellow gold, black dial, 41mm Rolex Day Date II – a watch big and bossy enough to match his size and personality. Some of Lebron’s other choice Rolexes include the Yachmaster II and the Sky-Dweller, both also in yellow gold versions like his Day Date II. He also has the aforementioned Everose gold Day-Date 40 with the olive green anniversary dial. Even as an official ambassador for AP, Lebron has seemed to favor his Rolex watch collection as of late, wearing them almost exclusively in recent years.

Other NBA Players and the Crown

Other notable NBA players (current and former) who are fans of the crown include:

Golden State Warrior, Stephen Curry, with his go-to stainless steel Rolex Deepsea Diver with a black dial,

Former Miami Heat, Dwyane Wade, although sponsored by Hublot, has an impressive collection of Rolexes on deck – most notably a Rolex Day-Date 40 costing upwards of $44K. Even more impressive – Wade gifted his entire staff with brand new Rolexes at a company party last year, spending nearly $120K on this more-than-generous gesture.

NBA legend and (most recently) Portland Trailblazer, Carmelo Anthony, is another Rolex fan with an impressive collection featuring a white gold sky-Dweller, a stainless steel Yacht-Master II, and several yellow gold Day-Date watches.

Football/Soccer Players All over the World

Rolex watches are equally popular with professional soccer players from all over the world. Or, better known by the rest of the world as, football players.

Among them most notably is Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the second highest paid athlete this year. So it practically goes without saying that his fully diamond encrusted Rolex GMT Master Ice, with a bezel completely adorned in princess-cut diamonds and baguette diamonds embellishing the bracelet, is considered the most expensive Rolex watch ever made - worth close to half a million dollars!

Neymar da Silva Santos Jr., more commonly known simply as Neymar, who plays for both Paris Saint-Germain club team and Brazil’s national team, is another pro soccer player who has been seen wearing a flashy Rolex GMT Master II, customized with 18 sapphires and 18 rubies on the bezel to compliment its diamond encrusted pave dial. Neymar’s icy wrist candy is allegedly priced in right around $112K.

Professional Fighters: Boxing & UFC

Another category of high-profile athletes rocking Rolex watches off field, off court, or in this case, out of the ring – are professional fighters.

Famous for flaunting his lavish lifestyle, boxing champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather owns an equally lavish timepiece collection estimated to be worth more than $7 million altogether. As a big fan of the crown, Mayweather’s watch collection has no shortage of Rolexes - including a couple special edition GMT Master II’s, Datejusts, Day Dates, Yacht Masters and Sky Dwellers - most of which have been heavily adorned with just about every precious stone available.

Just as lavish as Mayweather, competitively so, undefeated UFC Fighter Conor McGregor is also notorious for his fondness for Rolex watches. Most regularly seen flossing his Everose gold Rolex Sky-Dweller, McGregor is also known for his extravagant timepieces – many of which are Rolex. Unlike Mayweather, he has kept most of his watches in the same condition without any additional customizations or embellishments. That’s not to say McGregor isn’t a fan of the gemstone and additions done by the brand itself, as he has opted for the diamond hour markers on several of his 40mm Rolex Day-Dates, as well as a variety of dial colors and bracelet finishes.
