Low and behold, the first of many superhero-inspired timepieces to generate from the exciting new collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Marvel has made its debut into the world of both luxury watch fans and comic book fans everywhere. The new Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon watch, ref. 26620IO.OO.D077CA.01, was officially launched just this past weekend on April 10th – causing quite a stir with all its innovative and groundbreaking design and functionality; perfectly suited for a king.
The recent unveiling of the Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon was done at a star-studded event in L.A., hosted by actor and comedian Kevin Hart, and graced with the presence of celebrities including Lebron James and Serena Williams – both of whom are AP ambassadors. At the event, a surprise auction was held for a unique white gold Black Panther variant, of which all the proceeds were donated to charitable organizations, First Book and Ashoka. Both of these nonprofit organizations have partnered to benefit from the long awaited AP-Marvel collaboration, which will provide underprivileged youth in the United States – with the long-term goal of international expansion – the necessary funds and resources to access quality education. The benefit is off to a solid start, as the auctioned watch raked in a galactic $5.2 million in charitable proceeds. Let’s take a look at why this watch will fit perfectly into the Audemars Piguet collection.
With only 250 pieces made, this exclusive timepiece was exquisitely designed with no detail left unseen.
Black Panther AP Dial
Let’s start with the dial. Undoubtedly the most eye-catching feature of this watch is the sculpted Black Panther figure on the dial, comprised of white gold and meticulously hand painted accounting for every little detail of texture, contrast, and depth. His cutting-edge suit was laser carved, while all the many details of his facial features, hands, claws, and even his muscles were hand sculpted. This elaborate 3D rendition of the Marvel superhero is perfectly outlined with a purple inner bezel, and accented with classic white gold Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating.
Black Panther AP Case
Though not made of vibranium, the 42mm sandblasted titanium case created specifically for this watch is just as awesome. With a satin-brushed and textured black ceramic bezel and crown, and gleaming sapphire crystal and caseback, this watch is an absolute stunner on any wrist. Its futuristic and high-tech design is the complete embodiment of the Black Panther’s superhuman strength, plus the technological marvel that is the kingdom of Wakanda – which is sure to thrill both fans of the comic and fans of AP alike.
Black Panther AP Bracelet
In keeping with the distinctive Black Panther motif, this new timepiece comes available with a purple rubber strap, as well as an additional black rubber strap. Both color options of the bracelet complement the sloped purple inner bezel beautifully, creating an aesthetic unmistakable to one of Marvel’s fan favorites. Both straps come equipped with a titanium AP folding clasp – giving the watch a sleek and sporty aesthetic built for both comfort and quality.
Flying Tourbillon Movement
To further complement the intricate design and 3D effect of the dial, the two-tone flying tourbillon cage adds a whole other detailed tech display on this exciting limited edition new AP addition. Equipped with the ever-impressive hand wound Manufacture Calibre 2965 combined with AP’s latest generation of flying tourbillon movement, this watch is as technologically advanced in functionality as in its appearance. The display of movement plates is mesmerizing to look at and can be seen on both the front and the back of the watch through the “sapphire sandwich” of its glare-proof crystal and caseback. With a 72 hour power reserve and 50m of waterproof capability, this watch is certainly a technological marvel on top of a statement piece.
Homage to the King
With all the watch’s innovative features detailed above, it’s safe to say that AP truly outdid themselves with their first embodiment of its newly announced partnership with Marvel. AP could have taken a much easier route and just created a watch in the character’s signature colors of black, purple, and grey and still caused a stir. Fortunately for both watch heads and comic book fans, AP did not disappoint and moved boldly forward with the conceptualizing, designing, and well-thought-out work involved to create the limited edition Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” Flying Tourbillon timepiece. Especially in light of the recent passing of the late Chadwick Boseman – who played King T’Challa, the Black Panther himself – this watch is so well made, with as much meticulous detail incorporated into its many hand-crafted finishes, it’s almost as if it is a personal homage to Boseman, the Black Panther universe, and diehard fans of both Marvel and AP. The creation of this limited edition watch was nothing short of a job well done by AP, who has set the bar quite high for the rest of their superhero-esque timepieces to follow.
